Pumping, inspection or a new system?

Three kinds of septic work, three different jobs.

Routine

Pumping

A pumper empties the solids (sludge) and scum that build up in your tank, so they don't wash out and clog your drain field.

  • Most homes need it every 3 to 5 years
  • Sooner with a small tank, a big household or a garbage disposal
  • Gurgling drains, odors or soggy ground can mean it's overdue

Check-up

Inspection

Alabama has no standalone septic inspector license. Permit inspections go through your county health department, and a pumper or installer can check your tank during a service visit.

  • Common when buying or selling a home
  • Required as part of permitting for new systems and repairs
  • A maintenance check is not a regulatory inspection
How inspections work→
Bigger job

New system & repair

Licensed installers put in new systems and fix failing tanks, lines and drain fields. Both need a permit from your county health department.

  • New construction, or replacing a failed system
  • Repairs: broken baffles, lines, pumps or a saturated drain field
  • Advanced licenses cover more complex system designs

General guidance only. How often you need pumping depends on tank size, household size and use; ask a licensed pumper about your system.

Questions, answered

Straight answers about how this directory works.

Where do your listings come from?

Every one of our 1,583 listings comes from the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board (AOWB) public license roster, which we re-check weekly. A listing only shows a business name, phone and website as verified once the license holder has claimed it. Company names marked "possibly related -- not verified" are automated matches we haven't confirmed.

How do I find someone near me, or for an emergency?

Tap "Near me" and we'll list licensed septic companies that serve your county, nearest first. Your location is used once, in your browser, and never stored. For a backup or overflow, pumpers are who you want. We don't yet track which companies answer 24/7, so call a few, starting with the closest.

Do you show prices?

No, not unless a company adds them. We don't guess prices. Septic costs depend on tank size, access, distance and local permit rules, so ask for a quote. Our free request form sends your job to no more than 3 licensed contractors.

Can a septic company inspect my system?

Alabama doesn't license standalone septic inspectors. Permit inspections go through your county health department. A licensed pumper or installer can check your tank during a service visit, but that's a maintenance check, not a regulatory inspection.

I own a septic business. How do I claim or update my listing?

Find your license on our For owners page and verify by text message. Once you're verified, you can add your business name, website, hours, service area and how you want to receive leads, and you can come back to update them any time.

Is SepticListUSA free?

Yes, always for homeowners. Contractors can list for free, or choose a paid featured listing to receive forwarded requests.
